Veteran Transportation Service (VTS)

The Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) is supplement to the existing transportation available for Veterans. The service is available for Veterans with special needs and for those who don’t have available transportation to and from their appointments at the VA Medical Center (VAMC).

Eligible Requirements

  • You must be a Veteran enrolled for VA health care benefits
  • You must have a scheduled and authorized medical appointment requiring travel
    NOTE: A Veteran may be accompanied by one caregiver, spouse or family member

Volunteer Transportation Network (VTN)

VTN is a system of transportation operated by volunteers. This service is free of charge and is available to Veterans who do not have available transportation to and from their medical appointments at the VA medical center or our community VA health clinics.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrolled in VA health care
  • Reservations must be made in advance, as volunteer drivers provide service.

There are also several transportation options available in your local community. A list of helpful links is provided below. This is not a complete list. Please talk to your social worker, case manager, Primary Care Provider or others on your health care team for guidance. When utilizing the resources below, it is best to call ahead as services offered may have changed and most arrangements need to be made in advance.

Marion County

  • INDYGO (317) 635-3344 Public Transportation
    • Fixed Routes
    • INDYGO Transit Half-Fare Program - Provides a discount program that allows persons over age 65, under age 18, or with disabilities to ride Indianapolis city buses for half-fare.
    • Must apply in advance
    • Bus service days and hours vary by route

      • Live in Marion County, at least 60 years of age, and have completed an application are eligible for transportation for the following:
        • Door2Door - medical appointments, pharmacy needs and grocery shopping within Marion County $5.00 per roundtrip
        • Shuttle Service
        • Taxi Discount Coupons and Wheelchair Vouchers
    • CP Transportation (317) 291-9318
      • Provides non-emergency medical transportation services to Medicaid members enrolled in Indiana Medicaid MCOs and HMOs statewide
      • Cost varies by service
      • Must call 3 days in advance and be prepared to provide insurance information
    • Little Red Door Cancer Agency (317) 925-5595
      • Offers transportation to qualified cancer patients to and from chemotherapy, radiation, and related follow-up appointments. Vehicles can accommodate wheelchairs and walkers.
      • Live in Marion County
  • Jewish Family Services at the Albert and Sara Reuben Senior and Community Center (317) 259-6822 Ext. 8
  • Provides transportation to medical appointments for area seniors, within set boundaries.
  • Age 60 or older
  • Able to enter and exit car without assistance
  • Must schedule transportation in advance
  • $8.00 donation round trip requested
  • American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345
    • Provides cancer patients with free ground transportation to treatment centers and doctor appointments. This service is provided by trained volunteers.
    • Advance notice of four business days is required
    • Persons who require assistance getting to and from the vehicle, their residence, and the treatment facility must be accompanied by another person who can provide assistance.
  • Perry Senior Citizens Services (317) 783-9231
    • Provides transportation for medical and dental appointments within Perry Township or 5 miles beyond (will consider destinations in the vicinity of Eskenazi and IU Methodist.
    • Available to seniors living in Perry Township of Marion County.
    • Transportation is not wheelchair accessible.
    • Advance reservations are required
    • Donation of 50 cents per mile requested
