VA2K Walk and Roll
As we strive to honor service and empower health in the VA, Veterans, employees, and guests are invited to participate in the VA2K Walk & Roll on Wednesday May 21,2014 anytime from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This 1.24 mile (2K) walk & roll is a national event held on the 3rd Wednesday in May to promote National Employee Health and Fitness Day, support homeless Veterans, and involve our community in happenings at the VA.
The VA2K in 2013 nationally had greater than 25,000 participants collecting more than $300,000.00 in donations for our homeless Veterans. The Richard L. Roudebush VAMC in 2013 had 185 participants and contributed $1200.00 in donations.
Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating contribute to obesity and number of chronic disease including some cancers, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Exercise improves your mood, increases your energy, promotes better sleep, and decreases stress. Making the time to improve overall wellness and donating to our homeless Veterans are examples of how the employees at your VAMC give of themselves to better care for our nation’s heroes.
While not required, a donation helps our homeless Veterans. Our suggested items list includes:
- Gift certificates from the VAMC’s Retail Store
- IndyGo bus tickets
- New undergarments (underwear, T-shirts, socks of all sizes)
- New inflatable mattresses
- New pillows
- New camping chairs
- Food gift cards (McDonalds, Subway, etc)
Please come, have fun, and walk & roll with us any time from 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. out at the West 10th Street VA flag pole on Wednesday May 21. Encourage others in the community to participate in this healthy event that helps our Veterans - this is where more is better.
